In March 2024, I organized only one photography workshop in Taiwan: the “Still Life Photography Workshop.” Considering the needs of participants, I planned the content accordingly. I often receive questions from people about how to take good photos at home when their space is cluttered and the lighting is mixed. Do they really need multiple backdrops and lighting equipment to achieve quality images? That got me thinking—this workshop should be held in a place that feels like home, so participants can apply what they learn directly to their own living environments.
I reached out to MARAIS and received a positive response. The workshop was held at their Anhe Concept Store in Taipei. Located in Da’an District, just a short, tree-lined walk from the MRT station, the store’s elegant facade soon comes into view. As you stroll along, your mind calms and everyday worries fade, making it the perfect setting to draw inspiration for home styling.
The display space at MARAIS integrates Scandinavian design aesthetics, featuring several Danish home brands. Among them, &Tradition and ferm LIVING stood out to me—they’re familiar from curated shops in Germany and carry a sense of warmth.
The interior is styled in a soft, earthy almond tone that creates a cozy and elegant atmosphere. Large open windows bring in natural light and connect the indoors with a lush garden, enhancing the Nordic blend of nature and lifestyle through visual experience.
Leveraging the thoughtful spatial design, I created four styled shooting setups for the workshop. Each scene was carefully planned to allow practice in lighting, composition, styling, and even including people in the frame. Every object and arrangement within arm’s reach sparked inspiration, making it easy to spontaneously demonstrate techniques to participants.
During the workshop, various visitors came through MARAIS. A solo woman browsed scents and small decor items; two older ladies tried out chairs and asked for my opinion on seating as a photographer; couples explored lighting and accessories. Some left with purchases, others with ideas for their own homes.
I wanted to take this chance to share a few simple still life photography tips that align with the philosophy of MARAIS:
Observe the different aesthetics of objects when shot from above, at eye level, or at a 45-degree angle.
Use longer focal lengths to avoid distortion—this keeps objects looking elegant. Smartphone users can opt for 2x zoom or more.
Pay attention to light and shadow at different angles and times of day to enhance shine and texture.
Warm-colored items highlight ambiance, while cool-toned ones are great for showcasing texture details.
During editing, balance shadows, blacks, whites, and highlights to refine the image.
MARAIS was a co-host for this workshop—you might think I’m being overly complimentary. But truly, just spend thirty minutes visiting and you’ll see for yourself. Every corner is picture-perfect, and any item can add character to your living space.
