For my recent trip to Taiwan, I organized a photography workshop focused on still life and product photography. Recognizing the importance of creating a conducive environment, I carefully selected a venue that felt like home, allowing participants to apply their learning effectively.

After reaching out to Store Marais, I received a positive response and secured the venue at their Anhe Concept Store in Taipei. Located in the Da'an District, just a few minutes' walk from the subway amidst a canopy of trees, the store boasts an elegant facade. The journey to the store itself washes away the hustle and bustle, allowing for a wide embrace of inspiration from Store Marais.

The entire space is integrated with Scandinavian aesthetics, featuring several Danish home decor brands, including &Tradition and ferm LIVING, which are familiar sights from German select shops, evoking a sense of familiarity for me.

With warm earthy tones creating a comfortable and elegant atmosphere, the open layout invites natural light indoors, connecting seamlessly with the outdoor greenery, enhancing the Nordic natural and cultural experience visually.

Leveraging the design advantages of this space, the photography workshop was meticulously planned with four shooting scenes, each ingeniously arranged to practice lighting, composition, arrangement, and incorporating people into the frame. The abundance of decor items readily available not only sparked diverse inspirations for me but also made it easier to share photography techniques with participants.

Throughout the workshop, a diverse clientele visited the store. Singles were drawn to fragrance testing and admiring individual items, while two women engaged in lively discussions while trying out chairs and sofas, and many pairs selected accessories and lamps together. Whether taking home a cherished item or simply absorbing the home decorating inspiration, everyone left with a touch of magic.

Through this post, I aim to share simple still life photography techniques that complement Store Marais's philosophy:

  1. Carefully observe the beauty of objects from various angles: top-down, eye level, and at a forty-five-degree angle.

  2. Use a longer focal length to avoid distortion and maintain elegance in object portrayal; this applies even when using a smartphone.

  3. Pay attention to the interplay of light and shadow from different angles to enhance the gloss and texture of objects.

  4. Warm-colored objects can capture ambiance, while cool-colored ones highlight texture details.

  5. During post-processing, focus on balancing light, shadow, and contrast levels.

Store Marais is a co-host of this photography workshop, and while my words may seem embellished, a mere thirty-minute visit to the Anhe Concept Store will confirm their authenticity. Every corner is a potential scene, and every object is a wellspring of inspiration.

It's been a while since I've captured indoor space imagery, but like an old blade sharpened, viewing the images fills me with a profound sense of joy.
