人像攝影實用技巧 - 造型、情緒引導、後製
I majored in Interior Design, but Portrait Photography aroused my interest and let me practice regularly, and continue to explore. During the four years from 2010 to 2013, I had practiced taking portraits in large numbers and took pictures almost every weekend. Where could I find those people to practice? It was an interesting story. At that time, as long as I met the appropriate people for practice, such as the family of my daughter's classmate, the pregnant women in the MRT, the young men in the gym, the girl in the beauty store, etc. I asked about the opportunity for shooting.
In those years, more than hundreds of figures were photographed. They have different heights, skin colors, gender and age. They don't have the perfect body shape and appearance as models, but the experience allowed me to develop the ability to manage in different situations, including styling ideas. More importantly, I cultivated the skill of observation to find a unique quality of each person, which is important in portrait photography. Only by appreciating and loving the character of the person who is photographed, we can capture the unique expression and bring out the emotion of the images.
In this article, I will share my experience of portrait photography from the Styling, Emotional guidance and Editing. I hope you find it helpful. Have fun by shooting or being photographed.
For a portrait session, the style that a model (the one who is photographed) likes to wear is often inconsistent with the location or the atmosphere. Therefore, I usually recommend the protagonists to pick three looks and then choose the appropriate combination. Moreover, we consider the shoes, jewelry and accessories at the same time. When shooting a couple or a family portrait, instead of the partner looks, I suggest them to think about wearing harmonious colors of style to get unique images.
Besides, hair and makeup are important. I used to work with stylists and hair, makeup artists, but nowadays it is more about natural and unconventional style. Therefore, how to present the personal characteristics of the protagonist in the most natural way; in fact, it requires the ability to observe. This time, the portrait sessions in Macau; some of the protagonists even did not wear makeup. Then, it is important to communicate with them in advance to ensure skin care before shooting, so that the skin could be bright and glowing when shooting.
Emotional guidance is often mentioned in portrait photography, and it is the key to it. Let the protagonist's emotions naturally reveal, so that photographers have the opportunity to capture special moments. Before shooting, I used to meet with the protagonist and chat with each other to get a better understanding; this is the primary key to let the protagonist trust the photographer.
While shooting, it is the second key to guide the protagonist to imagine the picture and situation created by the photographer to achieve relaxation and cooperate with the photographer.
When shooting children, try to interact with them as adults; they will sense the respect and then meet your requirements.
In the portrait image editing, I put more thoughts into adjusting the contrast of light and shadow and other details, especially the skin tone and the tenderness of the skin. A few years ago, I preferred to settle my favorite filters to all images, but now I adjust the setting of each filter to match each protagonist's personality so that each session has its individual charm. The protagonists will also feel the sincerity of the photographer when receiving the album.
Portrait photography is always full of challenges for me, but it can also be creative because of different protagonists; capture emotions, and record the moments of others' lives.
