Because of this article, I read again the interview I did with Igor Josifovic, who wrote the book ‘Urban Jungle’ together with another author. Since then, I always browse his images on Instagram and fall in love with indoor plants and his comfortable lifestyle.
I met Igor at one of his favorite coffee shops in our first interview. This time, I visited his new apartment he had just moved in before New Year. We talked about his ideas in interior design, green-living and his new home. If you have heard about Igor, you might already scroll down to view the images I took from his space. Well, let us enjoy his home story right away!
Located at the center of Europe, Munich is a convenient city for Igor since it is easy for him to travel to other European cities. “Although living in this city is quite expensive, once you are used to it, you become satisfied when you can get a cup of coffee at a lower price in other neighboring cities compared to Munich.” Igor told me with a smile. “Munich might not be so creative at certain points, but the quality of life here is good.” He continued.
He had lived in his previous apartment for ten years. It was a rooftop flat which was a tiny space. However, it did not limit his creation to brighten the apartment and pursue a better living. “I am not a minimalist. You have seen how I style my home.” Igor pointed at certain places in the living room with his finger and smiled with a satirical expression. He made a joke about himself, but I could see that he enjoys decorating his rooms with different objects that he has collected for a long time.
As mentioned, Igor’s old apartment was tiny. “But it was great since I have developed my taste and lifestyle in the old apartment. Still, it was too small for me as an interior blogger who loves to take photos every day and uses the space as a background.” Therefore, Igor had an idea to start looking for a new and larger home.
It is important for Igor to have a pleasant living space and get inspired, same as traveling. “For me, to travel is to feel different cultures, to see beautiful things and to collect those memorable souvenirs.” He said to me. Souvenirs might be a book he found at a local flea market or a small plant he got in a foreign country that always reminds him of the unforgettable journeys. I wondered how Igor develops his taste and sense of aesthetic. Now I understand that they come from all the little details in life. Igor pays attention to them and feels the vibes.
Although blogging is his side job, he still takes perfect images like a professional. Even when taking images in daily life, photogenic atmosphere and details are essential and beyond everything. Through Igor’s photos, one might notice that he pursues perfectionism in some small details that others might not have considered before. From this point we can see that Igor pursues a sense of aesthetic at home not just for the sake of a perfect picture on his blog but because he enjoys his home with beautiful decoration. Igor calls a place home when it is somewhere he can rest comfortably at the end of a day.
It is not easy to search for a desired apartment in Munich since it is all about the budget and one’s ideal living conditions. “I am quite lucky to get this one.” Igor is satisfied with his new flat. It seems that a dream has come true.
He was not in a hurry to look for a new apartment. He found the flat via ImmobilienScout24. One after another, Igor only listened to his true feeling while he looked for his ideal place. I wondered what his criterion for an ideal living condition at the beginning were.
” As for my ideal apartment, a convenient location is a bonus, and having good natural light is also important. Besides, I wished my apartment to be in an old building in order to get a better photogenic background.” Igor believes that old buildings have better and more beautiful details than new ones. The ceiling is higher, and the staircase has more delicate details, and even the old-styled wooden floor has a special touch.
Luckily, after five months of searching, Igor got this apartment which was built in 1899 and has all the features he wishes for. When Igor opened the door and welcomed me into his new flat, I knew at first sight that there would be a touching story about Igor and this apartment.
A home is a place where you can relax and be yourself at the end of the day.
The owner had renovated the apartment before Igor moved in. It was like a blank canvas for Igor to create his decoration ideas. The kitchen in the new apartment is larger than the old one. Also, there is a little balcony to welcome the fresh and bright daylight. Once Igor has moved in, he was more than excited to design a new kitchen. The left-hand side of the kitchen is the cooking area. Igor’s kitchen was tailor-made by IKEA. Through its official website Igor first filled in a questionnaire about his ideas of a kitchen. Afterwards, a specialist of IKEA came to Igor’s apartment and made all the necessary measurements. Then, a kitchen designer of IKEA offered Igor the first proposal.
Igor’s blogging experience helps him to understand well about his ideal kitchen. Therefore, the proposal ran smoothly without any further appointments. They quickly moved to the next steps and finished building his dream kitchen. Igor originally had an idea of having blue tiles on the kitchen wall. He found his desired design which came from Spain online. The uneven surface pattern on each tile makes the whole kitchen wall looks unique under the sunlight. The color of the tiles also matches all the green plants which were placed in front of the wall.
The right-hand side of the kitchen is the bar area where Igor painted the wall in dark blue, another blue color. “It will be a perfect location to have breakfast when my bar stool arrives. I just ordered one online.” There are some lovely objects, books, plants and a speaker on the bar table. There was background music playing during our interview. All of them are Igor’s favorite songs. “I like timeless pop music. They bring back all those good memories.”
His playlist touched me. After the interview, I asked Igor if he could edit a playlist for this article. The playlist can be found at the end of the article, feel free to scroll down and play it while you read the story. Then you may have a better understanding of Igor’s home and his lifestyle.
Igor’s previous apartment was smaller so he had to choose new stuff wisely to fit into the little space. Since his new home is larger now, Igor had a different plan for adding new furniture to the new flat. He planned to create a different atmosphere for the new living space. Firstly, it is important to know what your needs are. The next step is to choose furniture that fits your personality and lifestyle. “How do I know if that style fits me?” “How about if I don’t like the style some years later?” People worry about these problems before they buy new furniture.
“To start from a chair or a corner is easier. If such a little change looks harmonious to the place, then it is a good start to develop a new style.” While Igor shared his thoughts with me, I looked around the room and appreciated his taste. His style presents an elegant side of his personality. It seems to me that he just places all decoration and furniture incidentally without effort. But still, it turns out to be perfect.
Igor is good at using different decorations to give his space a unique feeling. He found the decorations at the local flea markets or online stores. So far, he has a huge collection of decoration stuff. I wondered if there are criteria for collection.
“It is important to collect the object you like, then it will become your unique style. Think about what makes you feel touched, which color you like most and what you need in your life. Then start with a small collection.”
Does it cost a lot? “I usually look for vintage or second-hand stuff from local flea markets or websites such as Etsy and eBay (kleinanzeigen) and only buy affordable pieces.” Igor told me.
And how about fixing and organizing all stuff at home? Since I am a housewife, I know that the more small items you have at home, the longer time you spend on cleaning and fixing. “It is easy. As long as you like it, you are willing to spend time on it, including fixing and cleaning. No tricks.” Igor laughed. It seems that those things surrounding Igor’s life are not only for decoration and uploading photos on his blog, but also for a better lifestyle for himself.
There are three walls where Igor painted in blue at home. “They are all different blue.” Igor explained to me. He especially likes the blue tone in the sleeping room. He added many objects in this room that are made of natural materials to let himself feels comfortable and relaxed such as bamboo, cotton or linen. I also asked him his favorite brands when buying bedding sets. “Muji and H&M home collection are quite nice.” An idea to let you know.
Igor likes music. As long as he stays at home, there is music. Besides music, he also loves to apply perfume at home and on himself. He chooses different smells depending on the seasons. In wintertime, he likes the woody fragrance, whereas in summer or spring, he enjoys fruity or sweet smells. “I am open to all kinds of fragrances. Diptyque, Skondinavisk or Muji offer quite good scents for home. They are my favorites.”
Here is Igor’s playlist that I also enjoy a lot, especially when I prepare coffee and breakfast on weekend mornings. Listen to the music and let me know if you like them.
At the end of the interview, I asked Igor to introduce us three Instagramers who give him inspiration. If you go through these three accounts, namely oidim, _neon_beige, doitbutdoitnow, you realize they are all about green living and interior design. I hope you find some interesting points after reading this article and enjoy this home story as I do. We only live once, live for ourselves.
